FOCUS GROUP:  HEALTH & WELL-BEING

The focus group of Health & Well-Being will consider numerous health statistics and rates such as: cancer, diabetes, obesity and HIV; as well as nutrition and physical activity plans.

Strategic Community Impact Plan

Health and Wellbeing Final Goals including all Strategies   

 

Vision - Health and well-being: Our families will be physically and mentally healthy.

 

Goal # 22 --  Decrease youth risk behaviors such as substance abuse, tobacco use, unsafe sexual practices, dating violence, bullying and sexting. Strategies include:

General best practices

  1.  Increase the number of youth participating in evidenced-based programming to

decrease risk behaviors.

  1.  Increase parental support for student participation in such programming.
  2.  Implement a K-12 refusal skills curriculum.

Substance Abuse

  1. Implement peer-led programs focused on providing factual information about the

dangers of drinking.

  1.  Decrease alcohol use among youth by utilizing family-based approach to alcohol

prevention that recognizes the influence of parental alcohol abuse.

  1. Provide parents with alcohol addiction education and engagement skills training.

Tobacco Use

1         Increase and integrate the number of school and community-based programs focused on the danger of using tobacco products.

2         Implement community-based education programs focused on teaching prevention from initial tobacco usage.

3         Enhance partnerships with law enforcement to increase enforcement of no sale of tobacco and tobacco usage by minors.

Unsafe Sexual Practices

1         Implement community education programs that increase awareness and prevention of unsafe sexual practices.

2         Promote screening for sexually transmitted infections.   

 

Goal  # 23 --  Decrease personal barriers that prevent residents from accessing quality health care services (medical, mental, dental, specialty care and prescriptions).  Strategies include:

1.    Increase outreach and education to build awareness of the importance of preventive care and available options.

2.    Identify gaps in health care programs.

3.    Provide and increase outreach educational programs regarding various assistance and preventive care programs.

 

Goal # 24 -- Decrease the obesity rate in children and adults by increasing physical activity and healthy eating. Strategies include:

1                Implement focused programs that will provide families with skills utilizing community resources to improve healthy eating and physical activity opportunities.

2               Increase the knowledge and awareness of the community and stakeholders regarding healthy lifestyles.

3                              Enhance community efforts towards improving healthy lifestyles.

 

Goal  #  25 -- Increase opportunities for substance abuse treatment services to include co-occurring treatment. Strategies include:

1                              Increase support for substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation.

2                              Increase outreach and education to build awareness of the incidence of co-occurring disorders.

3               Increase the number of local substance abuse and mental health treatment providers who are providing co-occurring capable or evidence-based practice services
