FOCUS GROUP:  SELF SUFFICIENCY

The focus group of Self Sufficiency will consider statistics and data including U.S. Census data on poverty, annual reports on homelessness services and federal nutrition programs in Washington County.

Self Sufficiency Final Goals including all Strategies

Vision - Self-Sufficiency: Our citizens will have the skills and resources for independence

 

                Goal # 30 --Improve the financial literacy of county residents.  Strategies include:

1         take an inventory of available financial literacy programs; recruit organizations to identify individuals to be trained in financial literacy curriculum;

2         coordinate with WCPS to adopt the proposed “State Curriculum for Personal Financial literacy” and integrate with the adult curriculum;

3         canvas faith community to see what they have in regard to financial literacy;

4         create a county-wide financial literacy program that engages the public school system and non-profit organizations.

 

Goal # 31-- Create a Housing First Program.  Strategies include:

1.  Support the work of the Washington County Homeless Coalition for the initiation and implementation of a Housing First program;

     define target population; work with City and County government in designing ordinances that advance the goals of a Housing First program.

2.       assess existing community programs to enable streamlining and avoid duplication;

3.       identify funding;

4.        get buy-in from boards, staff and funders;

5.       develop program goals; define program design;

6.       hire and/or train/retrain staff;

7.       staff reviews and implements previous strategies and develops community linkages;

8.       conduct outreach to landlords; track program success and challenges.
